I woke up one morning with that old familiar ache in my lower back.  It’s from an old injury that has plagued me since my early twenties, and it comes back to haunt me on a regular basis.  I used to head straight to the chiropractor when the pain would flare up, but I never found one here in town that I knew enough to trust.  So now when the ache starts, I try to do better with my stretching, especially my ITB and hip flexors.  Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t. What is the best way to stick with your workout plan?

The question is a little misleading.  If you take a look at the peer reviewed studies out there, there is not a clear consensus on the BEST way, but there are definitely factors which will help you.  Yeah…we’ve heard the list:  Set specific, manageable goals, tell the whole world about your goals so that you have accountability, plan ahead….yada, yada, yada.  BOOORING!  It sounds soooooo drab, so clinical, so plain. A few days ago I saw a story on Yahoo about a man who ended up in the hospital after doing a couple of days of P90X.  I feel bad for the guy.  It’s gotta suck when you try to get back in shape, and next thing you know, you’re in the ER.  We probably all know someone like this guy; someone who has been all excited about getting back into shape, so they start a program, join a gym, start running, or any number of things, and then BOOM!  They get sick; they strain a muscle; they get so sore that they can barely move for a week then they never want to see a gym again.
